Beginning a Sentence with And or But

Beginning a Sentence with And or But Beginning a Sentence with And or But Beginning a Sentence with And or But By Maeve Maddox Several opinions about what is permissible in writing have acquired an almost religious authority with some English speakers. One of these opinions is that beginning a sentence with the coordinating conjunctions and and but is an unpardonable breach of usage. Here are some typical reader attitudes: I almost fainted when I read [a post] about the acceptability of beginning sentences with â€Å"and† or â€Å"but†. [How can anyone] justify the use of conjunctions to begin a sentence? It simply drives me crazy! Writers of English have been beginning sentences with and as long as English has been written. The Venerable Bede (672-735) did it. King Alfred (849-899) did it. You’ll also find examples in Swift (1667-1745), Johnson (1709-1784), Austen (1775-1817), Dickens (1812-1870), Orwell (1903-1950), and Roth (1933-). According to The Chicago Manual of Style, the belief that beginning a sentence with and, but, or so is an error â€Å"has no historical or grammatical foundation.† Not only that, but â€Å"a substantial percentage (often as many as 10 percent) of the sentences in first-rate writing begin with conjunctions. It has been so for centuries, and even the most conservative grammarians have followed this practice† (CMOS 5.206). Authors capable of â€Å"first-rate writing† are one matter. Teachers, on the other hand (and editors working with grammatically challenged adults) are wise to advise against it. Writing is a craft. Every craft demands that beginners learn in stages. A rule against beginning a sentence with a conjunction has pedagogical usefulness. Beginning writers benefit from being guided. They don’t need to have all the rules and exceptions dumped on them at the outset. My London headmistress forbade the use of semicolons. She said that semicolons could wait until students mastered the use of commas and periods. Her rule was intended to be transitional. Beginning writers overuse the conjunction and. Giving inexperienced writers permission to begin sentences with and is asking for trouble. Here, for example, is an excerpt from the writing of nine-year-old Daisy Ashford: Mr Salteena had dark short hair and mustache and whiskers which were very black and twisty. He was middle sized and he had very pale blue eyes With this style of writing, a rule against beginning a sentence with and can only be a blessing. In my teaching days, I forbade students to begin a sentence with because, not because I didn’t know about complex sentences, but because inexperienced writers tend to begin sentences with because and never get to a main clause. A practice that exacerbates this tendency in high school students is accepting sentence fragments as answers to essay questions on tests. For example: Question: Why did Silas put Eppie in the coal hole? Answer: Because she kept wandering away. Teachers of every subject could contribute to a higher standard of student writing by requiring students to rephrase the question in the answer: Question: Why did Silas put Eppie in the coal hole? Answer: Silas put Eppie in the coal hole because she kept wandering away. When students have learned to distinguish between a main clause and a dependent clause, they can progress to the use of because to introduce a subordinate clause. When they have learned to control their use of coordinating conjunctions, they can use them at the beginning of a sentence from time to time. Here are two examples from the work of writers known for â€Å"first-rate writing†: Besides, another purpose of the enlarged armywas to minimize the ever-present possibility of sedition. And with this purpose once again in mind, [Septimus Severus] took a number of steps to make the officers of the legions a privileged class and tie them firmly to his own person. –Michael Grant, History of Rome. If he charged, I could shoot; if he took no notice of me, it would be safe to leave him until the mahout came back. But also I knew that I was going to do no such thing. –George Orwell, Shooting an Elephant Like any stylistic device, beginning a sentence with and or but may be overused or used incorrectly. A common fault with but is to use it where and is required. But is an â€Å"adversative conjunction.† It introduces a contrast. Some writers tend to begin a sentence with but when and is the appropriate choice. Here’s a revision suggestion from The Chicago Manual of Style: Evaluate the contrasting force of the but in question, and see whether the needed word is really and; if and can be substituted, then but is almost certainly the wrong word. Bottom line: Beginning a sentence with and or but is a common stylistic device used in English by the best writers of every century. Writers who dislike the device are free to avoid it. Forbidding it to inexperienced writers has pedagogical value, but condemning it out of hand is to set a fetish above English idiom. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Use Windows Hooks in Delphi Applications

Use Windows Hooks in Delphi Applications Code submitted by Jens Borrisholt. Text by Zarko Gajic. By Jens: Hooks, I’ve seen a lot of people trying to make a clean solution for hooking messages in an application. So I decided some time ago to implement hooks as a class, with nice events and stuff :) Hook.pas makes it possible to assign a method pointer to a procedure pointer (with some help from assembler). For example: if you want to trap ALL keystrokes in your application - simply declare an instance of TKeyboardHook, assign an event handler for OnPreExecute or OnPostExecute, or both. Set you KeyboadHook active (KeyboardHook.Active : True) and you are out and running .. On Windows Hooks A hook is a point in the system message-handling mechanism where an application can install a subroutine to monitor the message traffic in the system and process certain types of messages before they reach the target window procedure. Put shortly, a hook is a function you can create as part of a dll or your application to monitor the goings on inside the Windows operating system. The idea is to write a function that is called every time a certain event in windows occurs - for example when a user presses a key on the keyboard or moves the mouse. For a more in depth introduction to hooks, take a look at What Windows hooks are and how to use them within a Delphi application. Hooking mechanism relies on Windows messages and callback functions. Types of Hooks For example:You can use the WH_KEYBOARD hook to monitor keyboard input posted to a message queue; You can use the WH_MOUSE hook to monitor mouse input posted to a message queue; You can a WH_SHELL hook procedure when the shell application is about to be activated and when a top-level window is created or destroyed. Hooks.pas TCBTHook - called before activating, creating, destroying, minimizing, maximizing, moving, or sizing a window; before completing a system command; before removing a mouse or keyboard event from the system message queue; before setting the input focus; or before synchronizing with the system message queue.TDebugHook - called before calling hook procedures associated with any other hook in the systemTGetMessageHook - enables an application to monitor messages about to be returned by the GetMessage or PeekMessage functionTJournalPlaybackHook - enables an application to insert messages into the system message queue.TJournalRecordHook - enables you to monitor and record input events (to record a sequence of mouse and keyboard events to play back later by using the WH_JOURNALPLAYBACK Hook).TKeyboardHook - enables an application to monitor message traffic for WM_KEYDOWN and WM_KEYUP messages.TMouseHook - enables you to monitor mouse messages about to be returned by the GetMessage or PeekMes sage function. TLowLevelKeyboardHook - enables you to monitor keyboard input events about to be posted in a thread input queue.TLowLevelMouseHook - enables you to monitor mouse input events about to be posted in a thread input queue. TKeyboardHook example Download hooks.pas demo application uses hooks, .... var   Ã‚  KeyboardHook: TKeyboardHook; .... //MainForms OnCreate event handler procedure TMainForm.FormCreate(Sender: TObject) ; begin   Ã‚  KeyboardHook : TKeyboardHook.Create;   Ã‚  KeyboardHook.OnPreExecute : KeyboardHookPREExecute;   Ã‚  KeyboardHook.Active : True; end; //handles KeyboardHooks OnPREExecute procedure TMainForm.KeyboardHookPREExecute(Hook: THook; var Hookmsg: THookMsg) ; var   Ã‚  Key: Word; begin   Ã‚  //Here you can choose if you want to return   Ã‚  //the key stroke to the application or not   Ã‚  Hookmsg.Result : IfThen(cbEatKeyStrokes.Checked, 1, 0) ;   Ã‚  Key : Hookmsg.WPARAM;   Ã‚  Caption : Char(key) ; end; Ready, set, hook :)

Strategic Analysis - Dunkin Brands Group, Inc Research Paper

Strategic Analysis - Dunkin Brands Group, Inc - Research Paper Example Strategic Analysis - Dunkin Brands Group, Inc The company needs to improve its liquidity position in order to avoid any certain liquidity crisis. Gross profit margin of the company has slightly decreased over the years and net profit margin of the company has improved over the years. It indicates that the effectiveness and efficiency of the company has improved in generating net profit out of its total sales revenue. Return on equity of the company has decreased over the year, which indicates the efficiency of the company has decreased in generating income out of its total equity. However, return on capital employed has increased over the years, which indicate that the company has generated more revenue out of its total capital employed as compared to the year 2012. Average settlement period for debtors has improved over the years, which indicate that the company is now efficient enough in collecting receivables from is debtors. Nevertheless, the average settlement period for creditors has decreased over the years, which indicat e that the company is delaying its payments to the creditors. Thus from the above analysis it can be said that the company needs to improve its liquidity ratio to meet the necessity of liquid funds. The profitability of the company is average and it can be improved by improving the gross profit margin and the return on equity. Apart from these, payment to creditors should be made quickly in order to improve the brand image among creditors and shareholders.

What is correlation analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 7000 words

What is correlation analysis - Essay Example What is correlation analysis? Coefficient of correlation is a measure of the strength of the linear relationship between two variables. In this case both variables must be at least the interval scale of measurement and the coefficient of correlation can range from -1.00 up to 1.00. If the correlation between two variables is 0, there is no association between them. A value of 1.00 indicates perfect positive correlation, and -1.00 perfect negative correlations. A positive sign means there is a direct relationship between the variables, and a negative sign means there is an inverse relationship. In regression analysis estimate one variable based on another variable and regression equation is an equation that expresses the linear relationship between two variables. The variable being estimated is the dependent variable and the variable used to make the estimate is the independent variable. The relationship between the variables must be linear. Both the independent and the dependent variables must interval or ratio scale and the least squares criterion is used to determine the regression equation. According to this assignment it’s required to express an equation in implicit form for two Major League Baseball teams in order to measure would it be profitable to pay $4 million to a free agent who would raise the team’s winning rate. A hypothesis is an assumption about the population parameter to be tested based on sample information. The statistical testing of hypothesis is the most important technique in statistical inference.

Class Constitutional Convention Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Class Constitutional Convention - Essay Example citizens do. Otherwise, this creates a rift between naturalized citizens and natural-born U.S. citizens. It denotes that naturalized citizenship is somehow less important than the natural-born U.S. citizen’s right. This is not true, but basically that is what our society is saying to immigrants who have become naturalized citizens—sending the message that they may be citizens, but they will never be accepted in the way natural-born U.S. citizens are. The cons of taking such a position would include the following: people might possibly think that a foreign-born President of the U.S. might only have the interests of his or her native country at heart instead of the United States. Also, Americans would probably see it as an area of concern that someone who was not necessarily originally from the United States might have other agendas in mind than besides having the nation’s interest at heart. Another element that might prevent foreign-born naturalized citizens in becoming President is that he or she might be scrutinized based upon his or her accent or appearance more than the content of what the candidate would actually be saying. It’s not polite to say, perhaps, but people profile others as to how they think their candidate should look, speak, and act. These are just a few examples of why this position has some cons. Hopefully these issues can be analyzed more in-depth so that we can give our natur alized brother and sister citizens the same possibility to believe in the dream of becoming President if they wish to do so. Whether one believes that foreign-born naturalized citizens should be able to become President or not is not so much the issue as this is an issue of fairness. No one has control over the fact of where in the world they are born; that is just a matter of consequence. However, foreign-born naturalized citizens should not be punished just because

Haimon in Antigone

Haimon in Antigone Sophocles Antigone tells a beautiful story of a woman who fights for her brother, Polynices, to be buried after her uncle and King, Creon, has declared that Polynices body will remain unburied for his blasphemy towards the state. For the culture this is dishonorable. Disobeying her uncle, Antigone goes ahead and buries her brother with miserable consequences. As characters are introduced to the plot, their purposes are clear, but one character may stand ambiguous in purpose; Antigones fiancà © Haimon for instance. But Haimon plays a very crucial role within the play, both conveying the true feelings of state and sympathizing with Antigones cause. Haimon as heir to the throne of Thebes remains very close with his father, but as fiancà © to Antigone, Haimon is torn as to advise his father whom he holds high. Therefore Haimons advisement starts timid: I cannot say [father] that you have reasoned badly. Yet there are men who can reason too; and their opinion might be helpful. Haimons clear drive to change his fathers mind is exhibited upon his first entrance in the play. You are not positioned to know everything says Haimon, for his father has stubbornly sentenced Antigone to be stoned to death, but Haimon is stern to tell of the countrys feelings towards the matter. I have heard them muttering and whispering in the dark about [Antigone.] They say no woman has ever, so unreasonably, died so shameful a death for a generous actthis is the way they talk out there in the city. Haimon clearly informs his father of the peoples disapproval of the Kings actions. Haimon serves as the only person to stand up to Creon. Clearly no resolution is brought about after the two have quarreled. But Haimon does in fact have a small effect on Creon, for Antigones sentence is changed for a much less demeaning one. Haimons presence is the only firm stand against Creons through the entire play. And this stand roots guilt within Creon that serves as motivation for the character. The final straw is pulled as the prophet Teiresias comes to Creon announcing his similar distaste, and bears a prophecy of tragedy. Creon is finally swayed to retract his horrible sentence but is too late, Antigone has killed herself, Haimon has killed himself, and Creons wife of the news kills herself. Everyone around Creon who had shared loved for one another have passed. And Haimons purpose is finally clear and digested.

Marketing Strategy for a New Company Essay -- Business and Management

Marketing Strategy for a New Company Introduction I am making a marketing strategy for a non-existing Service. The service is going to be unique and very broad in the region of car services such as garages, repair and modifying services, selling cars and parts, and even entertainment including car shows and racing once or if the company expands. The service will also include a bar or social room. The service that will use the marketing strategy will be situated in Northampton; Northampton is situated in the centre of England and has been expanded rapidly into a city. The place in Northampton will be six fields because it has large room and has a main road through it, it also had buses going to and from it. I am going to use research on other similar existing services to get ideas and recognise competition. I have chosen a business in cars because it is a popular product and is quite stable. I also found a growing trend in Car modifications and a gap in the market; especially in the Northamptonshire area where my service is going to exist. The company will be focused most in the modification market since this is where a gap is. The service will be for people in the market aged 18 + since it covers a very wide range of car services but will mainly be aimed at 18-35 males since the characteristic of modification is more popular at a younger age range of males. The prices for my service will be at a price above average than what the market is...

FDR and the New Deal essays

FDR and the New Deal essays When FDR took office in 1933, the nation was obviously ready for some great changes. In the thick of the Great Depression, America needed someone who could join the nation together and get the economy back where it once was. Franklin Roosevelt proved, for the most part, to be the perfect man for the job. From his radiant personality to his famous Hundred Day Legislative Campaign, he gave it all that he had. FDR had arguably the most liked and admired personality of any president. Because he had such a positive and determined attitude, he was able to win the support of most Americans. His colorful language and heartfelt deliveries all but forced the country to fall in love with the new president. With this brilliant personality and strong hold over the American people, FDR did more in one hundred days than Hoover had done in the previous four years of the Depression to combat it. However, his aides saw a very different side to him than did the public. He was described as "enigmatic" and "inscrutable." His enigmatic behaviors sometimes led to confusion and conflict within the White House. However, as far as the public was concerned, he could practically do no wrong. To help out with the dismal situation that America was in, Roosevelt went on a legislative spree, known as the Hundred Day Legislative Campaign. The banks had closed down in thirty-eight states, so FDR passed several acts to aid banks. To help banks open back up, the Emergency Banking Act was passed. Under this act, banks could reopen with a license and under supervision. To increase the public's confidence in banks, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, was formed. It insured all bank deposits up to five thousand dollars and separated deposit banking from investment banking. The Farm Credit Administration helped those who were in danger of losing their farms refinance them, and the Home Owner's Loan Corporation helped homeowners refinance their homes. To...

The Veil and Muslim

The Veil and Muslim Introduction Islamic women have worn the veil since time immemorial. The debate on whether the use of the veil does any good to the society has always existed since prehistoric times and it exists even today. This paper discusses how the veil became the symbol of Muslim civilization, what the veil meant to Islamic reformists and the clarity of the authors arguments.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Veil and Muslim specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The veil and Muslim civilization It can be argued that the veil was introduced by early Greek priests due to their faulty interpretation of the Islamic law. The earlier perception about women was so negative to the point that some people were quoted claiming that women were without soul. The veil portrayed the Islamic woman as inferior and without much purpose in the society in the old days. Since the civilization of any society is largely dependent on how all members of the society treat each other, then the cruel treatment of Islamic woman by the society as was usual in Egypt was a good measure of the pace of Muslim civilization. Most of the modernists and reformists that campaigned for fair treatment of the woman in the Islam community based most of their arguments on the use of the veil. This was due to the fact that the veil was associated with oppression of women. One of the reformists was quoted arguing that the Muslim woman was poorly mistreated in terms of empowerment through education, important roles in the society, her role in the family and most importantly the veil which was seen as a tool of alienation of the woman from the society. The veil was associated with all the bad things such as dirt, unattractiveness and other negative things. The plight of Islamic women was attributed to Islamic religion which people saw as burying the woman alive behind the veil. The Islamic woman also looked at the other societies of the world especially Christians who treated their women with respect and dignity. They were the only community in the world that covered their women inside a veil. Since the veil was associated with oppression then with time it became the symbol of Muslim civilization (Ahmed 1). What the veil meant to colonial reformists The colonial reformists were looking at liberating the Islamic community from the traditional setting to a more modern society that could fit with the other communities of the world. They saw that the biggest barrier to reforms was the way the Islamic community was treating their women.Advertising Looking for essay on ethnicity studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The veil was associated with all the degradation to women and as such they saw that the best way to liberate the society was to put pressure on the issue of the veil. The reformists saw the veil as a symbol of oppression. By comparing the veiled Muslim woma n with other liberated societies there was clear evidence to support their argument so that they would be successful in their reforms (Ahmed 1). Clarity of the authors’ arguments I agree with the way the author argues about the issue of the plight of the Muslim woman in the historic times and how the reformists handled the reform agenda by focusing on the treatment given to the Muslim woman. The author was able to clearly link the origin of the veil, the oppression of the Muslim woman and how the reformists handled the reform of the Muslim society by focusing on the veil. Conclusion The veil issue is a very important aspect of the Muslim community for a very long time. The veil was used as a reform tool by early reformists especially in Egypt due to its relationship with oppression of women. The author was able to show clearly the way reformists viewed and argued about the veil and oppression of women and how the Islam community could be reformed by focusing on the issue of t he veil. Evidence-Based Management of a Chronic Wound in an Elderly Female Research Paper

Evidence-Based Management of a Chronic Wound in an Elderly Female Patient with Type II Diabetes - Research Paper Example APA Format: Nussbaum, E.L. (2010). Evidence-Based Management of a Chronic Wound in an Elderly Female Patient with Type II Diabetes. Physiotherapy Canada, 62(2): 129-133. Database and Accession Number The article was accessed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Plus with Full Text Databases with accession number 2010644352. Keywords such as â€Å"evidenced-based, â€Å"chronic wound,† and â€Å"type II Diabetes† were used to locate the article. Summary The article identified the role of physical agents such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ultraviolet radiation, low-level laser therapy, and pulsed short-wave therapy in the management of chronic wounds (Nussbaum, 2010, 129). The clinical problem in question is whether there are supportive evidences and studies that would prove that ultrasound alone will be effective in wound healing and management of chronic wounds or supportive evidences and studies will suggest non-significant effect of ultrasound in wound healing and management of chronic wounds. Based on the clinical problem, the PICO question formulated is: â€Å"In elderly patients with Type II diabetes, how does wound treatment with ultrasound vs. wound treatment with all the physical agents affect wound healing and wound management?† The PICO question is formulated in a way that would emphasize the effect of ultrasound only in wound healing. Evidences from literatures are inconclusive of the effect of ultrasound to wound healing. Meta-analysis, Cochrane Group Reviews, and Randomized-Controlled Trials (RCTs) were the framework, model, or systematic approach used by the author to evaluate, compare, and critique the available literature. Critique from meta-analyses and reviews suggest that available evidence are inconclusive because of methodological limitations in terms of small number of trials and participants, heterogeneous methods, and limited pooling results (Nussbaum, 2010, 130). Meta-an alysis of RCTs from 1998 and 2002 showed benefits of uncertain degree in reduction of ulcer area; however, it was not clear whether reduction was a result of low-frequency (30 kHz) ultrasound or of water footbath. In the 2008 Cochrane Update using gel coupling instead of water footbath, pooling trials are interpreted using statistical measures of risk ratio and weighted mean difference, wherein, outcome showed that more ulcer were healed from using ultrasound and that using ultrasound was beneficial (Nussbaum, 2010, 130). Available literatures lack RCTs using ultrasound on non-venous origin. In general, there was no evidence of benefit from using ultrasound on wound healing and methodological limitations did not rule out possibility of benefit or harm. The outcome of the clinical problem is measured, compared, and evaluated using an acetate sheet, a free image software, a cotton-tipped probe and ruler, and Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool. The acetate sheet was used for tracing th e patient’s ulcer, the free image software for calculating the area of the wound, the cotton-tipped probe and ruler for approximating maximum wound depth and undermining, and the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool for the assessment of healing and ensuring validity and reliability (Nussbaum, 2010, 131). The biweekly photographic documentation must show a reduction of at least 30% over a 4-week period to consider ultrasound as an effective

Postmodernist Approach to Burial practice Research Paper - 2

Postmodernist Approach to Burial practice - Research Paper Example Notions of the people particular to God, heaven, hell, witches, spirits and souls are also leaded by the same. Conception of the related believes of the individual and society has the consequences on the rituals performed. It is around 10,000 years back that the death ritual is performed among the few earliest rituals of society. Variable practices are followed by the people of diversifying beliefs and one of the main reasons acting behind the burial practice of the people seems to be the one practiced by the ancients of particular group of people [CE11]. From Southern Iberia at Abrigo do Lagar Velho, the human burial of Upper Paleothic was discovered as an evidence of early modern humans in the European society [CD99]. Burial ritual is the found to be the most transformed ritual of the modern society and is very diversified in its nature depending upon a lot of social, cultural and religious factors but some of the anthropologists find the burial ritual as an only ritual which remained the same in practice in respect of the change in human behavior and the growth of the healthy cultural values [JC10]. Two of the postmodernist approach to burial practice includes cremation and embalming [LA04]. Cremation practice is followed almost all around the world. Problem of overcrowded cemeteries in the modern societies is thought to be resolved by the same process. Although cremation practice is relatively low in the American society and is declared as forbidden in the Orthodox Judaism community. Roman Catholic Church recently approved its practice in the Christian community and Hindus are the one who practice cremation strongly as compare all other school of thoughts. Muslim community is also not of the view of burning human and the scattering the ashes in the rivers due to potential health hazards. Cementation practice has involved no rich cultural heritage unless and until
